Internet Advertising, eBay, Etsy, Craiglist and Other Online Marketplaces
The Internet
You need your own ".com". Notice I said ".com", do not buy .org, .co, .biz, .info, or anything else. If a great name is say "carparts.com" and you buy "carparts.info" every time you advertise "carparts.info" you not only threw money away you helped your competitor at "carparts.com". Why? Because people are so used to adding .com at the end they only remember the first part "carparts" and then add ".com" automatically at the end.
Do keyword research and find out which words are searched the most for your product/service. Once you know them you will naturally include them in your writing on your web-page.
Update your web-page at least weekly with new fresh content (items, special deals, articles, etc.)
Write articles for the Web. Do you know enough about your business to write an article? There's bound to be a free e-zine or website related to it. Find them and see if they accept articles from freelancers. Do you have a flower business? Write an article about creating the perfect centerpiece. Are you in real estate? Write an insider article about finding the best deals. You're not expecting pay from these websites, but most would let you include a link to your website as part of your byline. Find a fresh angle and make your article interesting and useful, and people are likely to follow you to learn more. If you're a good writer, you can try trade magazines.
Advertise For Free On The Internet. A quick Google search will bring up dozens of websites that let you advertise your business for free in exchange for a link on your own website. Yes, it's a closed circle, but remember, you want your name out there. The more places you can get it into, the more chances you have to land a new client. Ecki, self-dubbed "The Grandfather of All Links" offers a database of over 10,000 websites where you can advertise for free. Free Advertising Forum lets you post your ad (visible to all visitors to the website) and gives you a free basic web-page of your own.
Help out others in forums. Answer questions, give advice, critiques and share your knowledge with others around you. It’s a great way to discover new business’s you have never seen and network with similar ones. Most forums will let you leave a link back to your web-page (either directly or in your signature line) and it's FREE.
Make sure you have a Facebook page, a Twitter account and if you are good writer a blog. I don’t update them each everyday but I try to do it at least once or twice a week, and they are FREE!
Do your friends have blogs? Twitter accounts? Facebook accounts? Have them feature your shop/service or at least mention you and your shop/service! You can network with other friends from etsy and help each other out because even though we all only know one another on a “world wide web” basis, we can still create a supportive community.
Facebook Ads and Google Adwords. You can advertise on Facebook and Google Adwords with a VERY small budget. You can set your own price and it’s a great way to keep track of where your customers are finding you and what they’re searching for to get to your web-page/business. It’s also very easy to create the ads as well — literally just uploading a nice picture and your business/web name, they do the rest of the work for you.
Special Advice For People Using Sites like Ebay/ArtFire/Etsy and Other Online Marketplace Communities
If there’s one thing you can do everyday multiple times a day for etsy, it’s RELIST, RELIST, RELIST. Just a few items, a few times a day can make a huge difference, even if it’s only every other day. You can use your phone to do it if you are away from home, so if you have that ability use it! I’ll do it if I’m just waiting in line at a store, waiting for coffee to be made at the coffee shop, etc.
Have you heard of Google Analytics? And Craftopolis.com(Etsy)? Those are AMAZING site to use as a resource for finding out information about WHO your shop is reaching, and WHERE your shop is popping up online. Also be sure to do a social media search on sites like WhosTalkin.com and SocialMention.com — you might be surprised to see your name in places you didn’t see before!Etsy-specific: Everyday I change my featured items in my shop. People who heart you will notice it looks different and take a look! Even if it is not a completely new item, it’s really great to keep the cycle moving and make sure your customers see all you have to offer!
